»»The romantic France has surely created many fashion designers by inserting amazing muses into their minds. It is the same country that womb the master of contemporary photography, Romain Laurent. Through his perceptions, the audiences are traveling the reality through the minds of fantasy. Romain Laurent was born in 1983 in Annecy, France. As he loved to empty his mind and let it wonder, there are always ideas in him that are creative and fun. When he was younger, he thought only graphic design can express his true thoughts to the world, but when he entered college, he found out he was wronged by his old dream. Depressed with the system of graphic design, he felt the rules of graphic have bound him into something dull. He searched for something that can be more playful and free. “I was a student in Design and a fairly good drawer, but I couldn’t convey a moment or what I had in mind exactly with this medium. Photography, at first traditional B&W and then digital with a hint of postproduction, brought me the satisfaction of expressing myself properly.” In 2006, he graduated from Les Gobelins majored in photography. While exploring the world of imaging, Romain Laurent glad he found a heaven of his own. “I thank for the advance of technology.” The photographer mentioned, “I was so touched when I finally produced something out of my mind. Photography is better than my paints and canvas; it turns my fantasies into realities.”
As a master of perceptions, Romain Laurent love to play and twist the viewers’ minds by altering the reality we used to know. “Aside from the effects, I did not do much different from other photographers.” Romain Laurent kindly shared his secrets of photography to everyone. “I only change the idea of some basic rules in photography a bit. I made photography more boundless than before.” In addition, he told his interviewers that the world can be either dull or interesting. It really depends on how the viewers view it. In addition with the master pieces such as “Tilt”, “l’Horizon”, “Fun Top”, and “Water Bubble”, he also shot for Coca Cola’s 2009 commercials, Discovery Channel’s 2010 commercials, Nike’s 2011 commercials, and Panasonic LUMIX GF 3 2012 commercials.
As his favorite experience in photography, he told the interviewer, “I would say whenever I travel and meet people on a project is a great moment. When I put the final touch on a series is a very enjoyable feeling as well. Actually, I remember having to shoot a sunset in Cape Town bay from a boat deck for a french commercial. We had a huge plastic bubble anchored in the middle of the ocean and we would have a 10min period of shooting, 15min break in a 2-3 hours time span so we would get all the different mood options of sunset. Being on that boat, shooting such a surreal moment is definitely one of the best moment!” Furthermore, as to encourage the new comers of photography, he said, “Try to find a balance between working your ass off to get a commissioned work and developing your personal style. Also never give up an idea if you think it’s worth doing, and most important, finish it.”««
