»»Named as one of the most influential artists in the 20th century, Lucian Freud’s figurative portraits explored people’s true emotional and even reached to a psychoanalysis status. As a grandson of famous neurologist Sigmund Freud, Lucian Freud came to the UK in 1933 and became a citizen. In his childhood, Freud already showed his artistic talent.
His early style was very close to German Expressionism though the artist himself denied it and surrealism. After 1950s, the style became more rough and figurative. Normally, Freud would use a rough brush to express the texture of muscles and sitters were often his close friends, family, or lovers. It made his painting more penetrative not even just the physical part, but also to the emotional status.
Freud and Francis Bacon met in 1944 and the two soon developed a solid friendship going to all the clubs and bars in Soho. They both painted each other into paintings which reached a high price in an art auction event. In the early days, Freud was also a womanizer who had romances with many women and fathered 14 children.
His connection with fashion ranges from many aspects. Kate Moss was one of his close friends and muses in the late year who modeled for him and the two co-create some photo images. Leigh Bowery was Lucian’s sitter too. The most special part was that the partygoer always went without makeups in front of Lucian’ paintings.
The former designer Nicole Farhi just introduced her first sculpture exhibition in which showcased her portrait of Lucian Freud. Jil Sander morphs many of Freud’s paintings into the brand’s campaigns. Oliver Spencer 2012 FW men collection and Camilla and Marc 2014 FW injected Freud spirit into their collection. Burberry, and Alexander McQueen 2014 FW men’s wear all traced back into the vintage London scenes which Lucian Freud stood a central character. Designers put his image onto the trench or merged his style into the outfit. Dries van Noten got inspiration from Lucian’s palette and provided a calm yet modern designed collection.««
