»»Have you ever heard of Jean-Michel Basquiat? While the 80s gave the art circle a great boost, the pop and street graffiti art has been the trend of influence since then. As the master of street graffiti, Jean-Michel Basquiat is very influential not only in art, but also in fashion.
Born in 1960’s Brooklyn, New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat grew in the environment of street art. At the age of 17, he and his friend Al Diaz created a façade of “SAMO” to start the life of street art. While they treated the streets of Brooklyn as canvas, they soon became famous in the area. In 1978, Village Voice wrote a report about the street art, therefore, also brought the fame to Jean-Michel Basquiat and his mate. In 1979, separated from Al Diaz, he started to do solo in the street. Few years later, he left the street and starts the exhibition in “The Times Square Show”. As a great success, he fulfilled his greatest wish to exhibit his works in the art gallery, Whitney Museum of American Art. At the time, he was the youngest of all the attendees.
For his inspirations, he loved to use elements form the streets. Doors, denim, footballs, for example, painted with crowns and his signature “c”, can clearly identify as his works. In addition, the skulls and animal skeletons elements from his works were inspired by Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body, the book that inspired him the most.
As an African American artist, his works also included many race elements. These signs can be seen in both “History of the Black People” and “The Death of Michael Stewart”. Therefore, the street gave him a title of “the first famous African American artist”. Moreover, he loved to use his African American icons in his works. Like his works, “Charlie the First” and more, he added his icons like Jeans Dean, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin within them.
His icon also included Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente, where he added many pop art elements into his works. In fashion, 1987’s Comme des Garçons, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Karl Lagerfeld’s early collections can all sense the taste of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s art. In 1995’s Elle, there’s a themed issue made in November just for the artist. In 21st century, Roberto Cavalli’s 2003 FW collection, Valentino 2006 FW collection, and Alexander Wang 2011 SS collection can all observed the sense of Jean-Michel Basquiat through patterns, makeups, and hair style. In 2013 SS, designer Amaka Osakwe’s works were inspired from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, and Wangenchi Mutu, which led Maki Oh into the world of colorful graffiti. Furthermore, Uniqlo’s T shirt collection, Reebok’s limited sneakers, and MSY Group’s Iphone and Ipad case, are all inspired from Jean-Michel Basquiat. For more design, there are also Burton’s snow board, and D’Usee Cognac VSOP’s campaign are all pieces that celebrates Jean-Michel Basquiat. In addition, there are also news of the new action of Supreme’s 2013SS will do something with Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Philistines”.As of now, let us wait and see. ««
